Individual Details

John Alexander

(Abt 1714 - 6 Jan 1802)

Brothers Joseph and John moved to Pennsylvania about 1740, as well as their mother, Mary Steele Alexander Rankin, and second husband Adam Rankin. John can be found in the 13 August 1767 records of York County, Pennsylvania where he was involved in the transfer of ten acres of land to the Middle Presbyterian Church in Hamiltonban Township (near the border with Lancaster County). He purchased 400 acres of land in Augusta County, Virginia on 16 May 1769 while still living in York County, Pennsylvania. This land was in the same general area of the 265 acres previously settled by Joseph (John's brother) in November 1768, and James Craig. It was near the town of Greenville and the border of Rockbridge County. These families had moved to Washington County, Virginia by 1780, and settled south of Abingdon at the south fork of the Holston River in the Green Spring area (Beverly Manor District). Eventually, all seven of John's sons (Oliver, James, Joseph, Ebenezer, William Jeremiah and John) settled there before moving to east Tennessee. John's sons, Jeremiah and John, were half brothers to their other siblings after the death of John's first wife.
