- Hooven, in his confession, implicated his wife and mother of his two young children, in the poisoning of her seventeen-year-old brother, James Leo Carroll, three years ago. Mrs. Huff was questioned, but was released when she said her husband was suffering from shell shock and that his “confessions’ were mere delusions. [3]
- It was the second confessed killing by Hooven which facts have failed to substantiate. Los Angeles authorities recently announced that James Leo Carroll, brother of Hooven’s second wife, died as a result of alcoholic poisoning and not as a result of poison which the prisoner said he and his wife gave to the youth. NO POISON FOUND IN GIRL’S ORGANSNo Traces of chemical poison which would have caused the death of Miss Ruth Little, 17 years old, of Summitville, were revealed in an analysis of portions of her vital organs, according to a report made yesterday by Dr. R. N. Harger of the Indiana university school of medicine. Dr. Harger’s report, made to Earl Sells, Madison county coroner, showed no arsenic or strychnine, the former said. He said, however, that slight traces of mercury were found, but not in sufficient quantity to have caused death.
This report is in contradiction to the confession of James W. Hooven, now in custody at Los Angeles, Cal., where he is being held until an investigation of his statements are completed at Anderson. Hooven told Los Angeles authorities that he poisoned Miss Little, his sister-in-law, in 1919, in revenge against her sister, his wife, for obtaining a divorce from him.
The girl’s body was exhumed by Madison County authorities several days ago and the organs were removed for examination. An added examination, not yet completed, is being made by Dr. Frank Forrey, pathologist at the school of medicine.

PROSECUTION ABANDONED.
ANDERSON, Ind., May 31. – Sheriff Frank Daniels of Madison county this afternoon sent a telegram to Sheriff W. I. Treager of Los Angeles, Cal., advising him that Madison county would make no claim for James Hooven, 27 years old, alias James Huff, who is alleged to have confessed while in jail at Los Angles that he poisoned his sister-in-law, Ruth Little, at Summitville. Decision of Madison county authorities to abandon efforts to prosecute Hooven resulted when chemical analysis of the girl’s vital organs failed to show any trace of poison. [1]

HOOVEN CONFESSION EXPLODED WHEN NO POISON WAS LOCATED
-----------------------------------
The confession of James Hooven, alias Huff, in jail at Los Angeles, Calif., that he poisoned Ruth Little, former Summitville girl, nine years ago, was exploded, and the belief that he is insane was sustained Thursday when pathologists reported that there were no traces of poison in the vital organs taken from a grave at VanBuren one week ago.
It was the second confessed killing by Hooven which facts have failed to substantiate. Los Angeles authorities recently announced that James Leo Carroll, brother of Hooven’s second wife, died as a result of alcoholic poisoning and not as a result of poison which the prisoner said he and his wife gave to the youth.
Following the report on the chemical analysis of the organs made by Dr. R. N. Harger, professor of biological chemistry and toxicology in the state chemical laboratories at Indianapolis, Sheriff Fran Daniels wired W. I. Treager, sheriff of Los Angeles county, authorizing the release of Hooven. The prisoner is eligible to parole on completion of his sentence of six months for petit larceny. He had been detained pending the outcome of the analysis of the organs of the Little girl.
Oswald Ryan, attorney for the girls parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Little, issued the following statement:
“We are convinced that there is not sufficient evidence to justify a prosecution based on Hooven’s alleged confession. So far as we are concerned the matter is settled.”
In the confession, which has now been disproved, Hooven said he gave strychnine and arsenic to the Little girl, who was then 16 years old, to gain vengeance on his first wife, now Mrs. Blanche Musick of Summitville. He said he fed it to her in quail soup while she was ill at the home of her parents in Summitville in November, 1919.
Hooven left Madison county and served a sentence for automobile theft and never returned. He went to Los Angeles where he was married the second time. Several months ago he was arrested for thievery and while serving time summoned the jailer to his cell, saying he wished to confess to relieve his conscience. [2]
