Residence (family)
- Residence: 2810 S. GharkeyDeath
- Bef Aug 2013 [1]- 1933 - About a month after Jane's birth tragedy struck. Lola was washing clothes in the washhouse with a Maytag gasoline powered washing machine. The motor was not in god shape and had a tendency to flood on starting. My grandfather would deal with it by taking out the spark plug and lighting a match to burn off the excess gas. Lola did the same thing except she didn't go outside the washhouse to light the match. It was filled with gasoline fumes and there was a flash explosion. Lola apparently in fright inhaled the flames and scorched her lungs. She died a couple days later. I believe she was 18. BTW, she and Leslie were living with my grandparents in a large old house at 23rd and Gharkey where Hartley Truck Parts is today. [2]
Young Mother Dies of Gasoline Burns
Mrs. Lola Arnold, 18, wife of Leslie Arnold, 2810 South Gharkey Street, died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at Ball Hospital from burns sustained in a gasoline explosion Thursday.
The body was removed to the Moffitt-Piepho funeral home and services will be at 2 o'clock Thursday at the Willard Street Church of God with burial at Elm Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Allen Will officiate. The body will be returned to the family home tonight.
Survivors are the husband, a month-old daughter Artie Jean; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lucas, two sisters, Marian and Jacobina, and three brothers, John, Burl and Donald, all of Muncie.
Mrs. Arnold was trying to start a washing machine powered with a gasoline motor and when she tried to burn grease from a carburetor feed pipe with a match, fumes in the small building in which she was working, exploded. Gasoline she had spilled on her dress while filling the motor tank also caught fire. [3]
