OBITUARY
Mary Jane Tomlinson, daughter of Allen and Martha Perisho Tomlinson, was born in Hamilton county, Indiana, January 21st, 1858; she departed this life January 13th, 1929 at her home in Noblesville, Indiana within 8 days of her 71st birthday.
Much might be said of her childhood, home and surroundings. Coming from a long line of early Quaker Ancestry she was reared tenderly and carefully; educated in public and church schools; was given the best advantages of that early day. Her parents, Allen and Martha were progressive and yet conservative in their acts and ideas of life.
Of a family of six children, Luther, Orlando, William, Mary Jane, Elwood B, and Clara - since the death of this our sister, only Clara remains - she being the wife of Horace W. Carey and residing in Indianapolis.
We do not think of Mary Horney as an old person and yet she has lived to see the passing to the Great Beyond, of Father, Mother, brothers and sisters except Clara, and also the Companion of her life, Alpheus Horney. From a child she was a Christian. Her brothers and sisters were all Christians. The only remaining brother, Orlando C. Tomlinson, a prominent Minister in the Friends church, passed away at his home in Lima, Ohio just two weeks ago, December 31st.
In this family was a strong bond of Christian love and fellowship. They loved each other so dearly and yet accepted God's chastenings with touching resign, as one by one the family has been called Home. In the little memorandum kept by Mary Horney is recorded this little prayer written on the death of her father and mother, so indicative of her life and Christian faith:
"Oh My Father who art in Heaven, do thou grant that we their children,
May everyone live to thy glory and honor,
On Earth and be gathered with Thee in Heaven,
A reunited family with our loved ones, for Jesus Sake,
Amen and Amen"
On February 21st, 1878, Mary Jane Tomlinson and Alpheus L. Horney were united in marriage by Nathen H. Clark, whom Alpheus recognized as Father. To this union was born four children. Royal, Burnie, Raymond and Mabel. Burnie died in infancy. In the mother's diary she wrote: "Dear little Burnie lent sunshine to the home for ten short months and then was transplanted to Paradise." No greater blessing ever came to Hinkle Creek meeting than when Alpheus Horney brought his bride to live in the vicinity. Married at twenty years of age - a mere girl - but with the Christ life shining out of her soul; with all the vivacity of youth; with the spirit of an earnest Christian; self-sacrificing, and willing to shoulder any burden, she was alert to every progressive move, and yet careful and wise in her judgment. Such was Mary Horney, who with her husband for so many years staunchly supported the Friends church at Hinkle. And now with the death of this our sister, passes the last charter member of the Hinkle Creek Missionary Society. But she is not dead - she has only passed on, and her influence and her life shall continue to live on, yes it shall live in the lives of her children, Raymond and Ethel Horney with their children Adrian, Kenneth and Frances - with the families of Royal and Florence Horney and the one daughter, Susan, Mable Lennen and daughter, Guenivere. Mary Horney had a wealth of treasure and love in her children and grandchildren - yes, and her great grandchildren.
In the early home life of Alpheus and Mary Horney was established the family altar with the daily prayer, the regular habits of attendance at church and Sunday school. As the babies came into their home, the boys first, her one short prayer was that her little boys might escape the snares and pitfalls of a sinful world. The prayers were answered while she yet lived, as she saw them grow into strong stalwart men - her daughter a comfort in her failing years.
The real life of Mary Horney was lived early. While in the vigor of young womanhood she was stricken with typhoid fever and for weeks and weeks her life hung in the balance, never was she permitted to recover sufficiently to take up the heavy burden of life again, but the sweet Christian spirit remained. And during the years that have followed she has lived the quiet Christian life in the home and wherever her lot was cast. One year ago the husband and father was called Home. Since then she has been patiently waiting the summoned to come up higher.
Reverently we bow in submission and to the tender memory of mother and grandmother we commit these noble sons and daughter and grandchildren. Again quoting words of her own:
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes,
And there shall be no death,
Neither sorrow nor crying,
Neither shall there be any pains,
For the former things are passed away." [2]
