Bio NoteAfter attending Eastern State Normal School, Eugene taught school for a year. He then returned to the family homestead and engaged in farming for a couple of years. In 1885, he decided to go west and moved to San Francisco. Here he worked for William H. Rouse and Company, a wholesale produce commission house. In 1889, he took a new position as superintendent of the California Fruit and Wine Land Company. After several years, he then spent some time mining in Tuolumne County. Returning to Fresno, he was appointed deputy county auditor on January 10, 1899, a position he held for the rest of his working life, interrupted only by the serving of two years as county expert and a short term as deputy county treasurer.
