Wilbur enlisted for 3 years of service in July 1862, joining Co. I, 16th Maine Regiment of Infantry Volunteers; and serving as a Private, Corporal, Sergeant, color-bearer, orderly and Lieutenant until the end of the war. To quote Walter L. Mower, "Distinguished for gallantry and courage; twice wounded and taken prisoner. Besides many smaller engagements, [he] was with his regiment at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Petersburg to which scenes he seldom referred unless general conversation with a comrade. At Gettysburg on that memorable 1 Jly. he carried the colors with conspicuous ability, and when the order "Fall in, Forward Sixteenth, Charge Bayonets" was given, 'color-sergeant Wilbur F. Mower was the first man to jump the fence, and the regiment followd with a ringing cheer, and in the face of a galling fire, went double-quick, scattering the rebel line pell-mell to the rear and into the woods, but in the face of tremendous odds, while maintaining with the much reduced regiment, just before being captured as prisoner by the enemy, tore his flag in shreds and made kindling wood of the staff that the boys in blue might claim possession of their colors as priceless trophies of that trying hour, which are cared for to this day.'
