Militaryenlisting in the Civil War in September 1862 as a member of Company G, 23rd Regiment Maine Volunteers, where he was Corporal and Company Clerk. He was mustered out in July, 1863. He subsequently was a G.A.R. member.

Bio NoteLowell had an excellent musical ability. Possessing a "very melodious bass voice," he loved to sing. Outside of church, Lowell, along with his sister Julia, her husband Virgil Sprague, and Sarah Winslow, daughter of the singing school master, formed a quartet. Aside from singing in church, they often gave oustide concerts.
Bio NoteLowell was a firm temperance advocate.
ReligionFree Baptist, involved in the Sunday School program. He succeeded his father as Deacon and church clerk. He also was a chorister in the church for over 40 years
