Obituary
BREWER - Ethel H. Wakely passed away peacefully at her home in Sanford the evening of Aug. 2, 2003. Ethel Madeline Hewes was born June 2, 1920, in South Brewer, the eighth child of Lewis Hewes and Laura Lagasse Hewes. She attended Brewer schools until her graduation from Brewer High School in 1937. Ethel worked at Eastern Fine Paper following graduation. She stopped working in 1950 to become a homemaker and mother. On June 4, 1949, she married George W. Wakely, who predeceased her in October of 1981. Together they had two children, John W. Wakely and Nancy E. Wakely Hoctor. Ethel, George, and John Wakely were lifelong residents of Brewer, living for more than 40 years on Mill Street. Ethel enjoyed knitting for family and church fairs. Over her life she made hundreds of mittens and baby booties for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was an avid reader of historical fiction and mysteries. Ethel always kept the family up on current events over dinner. In February of 2002, she was predeceased by her only son, John and in April of 2002, she moved to Sanford to live out the rest of her life with her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren and pets. While missing the city of Brewer and her life there, she was a wonderful addition to the Hoctor household in Sanford. Ethel had a generous spirit and would always lend a hand or an ear to anyone in need. She loved to tell her grandchildren stories of growing up in a large family of 10 children. Ethel claimed not to be an animal person but warmly accepted all of the Hoctor's pets, even rocking one cat, Isaac, like a baby everyday and throwing the ball for the Gold Retriever, Daphne, right up until her death at 83 years of age. She had a very close relationship with her son-in-law, Michael, they always lingered at the dinner table after they were done eating to share stories, tell jokes, and talk about the garden they were looking forward to. Ethel had recently started attending bible study and church services at Curtis Lake Church in Sanford.Endnotes
