Obituary
BANGOR - George W. Hawkes Jr., 79, of Bangor, died May 4, 1991, at a Bar Harbor health-care center. He was born in Fairfield, May 22, 1911, the son of George W. and Edna E. (Hadlock) Hawkes Sr. He was a graduate of Deering High School Class of 1929, and the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1933. George was a sales representative for 38 years, employed by the Manville Corp., formerly Johns-Manville, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the First Universalist Church; a member of the Bangor Kiwanis Club and its president in 1955; and a trustee of the Bangor Water District from 1947-1978. George will be remembered as an avid candlepin bowler and Boston Red Sox fan. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul W. and Norma Hawkes; three grandchildren, James Paul Hawkes, John Paul Hawkes and Sarah Ann Hawkes, all of Woolwich; one brother, Ernest W. Hawkes of Gorham; one sister, Clara Minott of Augusta; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Charline (Wilson) Hawkes. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Disease, 170 Highland Ave., Scarborough 04074.Endnotes
