Obituary of Charles W. Hooker

CHAPEL HILL - Dr. Charles W. Hooker, a professor of Anatomy at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for 32 years, died Wednesday, May 25, 1994, after a long illness. He was 83.

Dr. Hooker came to Chapel Hill as chairman of the Department of Anatomy in 1949, shortly after a four year medical school was established at the university. He remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1981.

In 1985, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the School of Medicine.

Dr. Hooker was active in the affairs of both the community and the university. He served as an elder at University Presbyterian Church, where he was a longtime member, as president of the Chapel Hill Historical Society, as president and secretary of the Tar Hell Golden K. Kiwanis Club, and as a board member for the Chapel Hill Preservation Society, the Orange County Historical Society, and the Village Elders.

He earned Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees at Duke University. He was a National Research Council Fellow at the University of Rochester from 1933-34, and a Research Fellow at Duke from 1934-36. Before coming to Chapel Hill, he was an instructor of Anatomy at Tulane University from 1936-37, an associate professor of Anatomy at Yale University from 1937-48, and a professor of Cytology at Emory University from 1948-49.

Dr. Hooker served as president of the Elisha Mitchell

Scientific Society, president of Sigma Xi scientific group, a founder and member of the Bulitt History of Medicine Club, secretary and treasurer of the Anatomical Record, secretary and treasurer of the American Association for Cancer Research, and executive committee member of the American Association of Anatomists. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was listed in Who's Who in America.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elma B. Hooker; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Phipps of Greensboro; a son, Robert W. Hooker of Saint Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Susan Bryan Stumpf of Rhinelander, Wis., Mrs. Elizabeth Rose of Gastonia, and Mrs. Mariella Francisco of Van Nuys, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at the University Presbyterian Church. A private burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill or to a favorite charity.
