Obituary of Elma B. Hooker

CHAPEL HILL -- Elma B. Hooker died Saturday at the Carol Woods Retirement Community following a long illness. She was 85.

She attended Duke University, where she earned a bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics, becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, she taught math at Campbell College.

A longtime resident of Chapel Hill, she moved to the area with her husband in 1949 after he joined the faculty at UNC School of Medicine. She was a member of University Presbyterian Church and was active in the church school and Presbyterian Women. Over the years, she was a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer at UNC Hospitals and a member of the Chapel Hill Historical Society.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Carol Woods. Private burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth H. Phipps of Greensboro; a son, Robert W. Hooker of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University Presbyterian Church or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
