1862; Winchester, Va., June 13-15, 1863; Siege of Petersburg, Va., June to September, 1864; Battle of the Crater, Va., July 30, 1864; Siege of Richmond, Va., October, 1864, to April, 1865; Second Battle of Fair Oaks, Va., October 27, 1864; occupation of Richmond, Va., April 3, 1865.
The 5th Regiment of Infantry was mustered out of the military service of the United States at Fredericksburg, Va., September 1, 1865, and transported thence to Baltimore, Md., where the regiment disbanded.

Jane and William moved to Peirce street in 1864 and he died shortly thereafter according to a newspaper article on Jane's death. The 1863 directory lists him as a soldier at 129 Peirce. A William McCarthy died intestate in 1867 in Baltimore and his wife Elizabeth was made administrator Dec. 10, 1867.Endnotes
