AGED WOMAN FOUND DEADBody of Mrs. McCarter On Floor In Room Where She Lived Alone
THERE FOR SEVERAL DAYS
She Had Not Been Seen Since Monday - Had $300 In Bank - Was 85 Years Old - Rumor of Fortune
To die alone and uncared for while possessing a modest bank account was the tragic fate of Mrs. Jane McCarter, about 83 years old, whose body was found yesterday in the basement at 763 West Franklin Street, where it had been several days. Mrs. McCarter who was the caretaker of the house, had not been seen since last Monday, and it is the opinion of Coroner Patrick F. Martin that she died not later than Wednesday. He issued a certificate of death from natural causes.
Mrs. Charles A. Keith, who lives next door, not having seen her neighbor since Monday became uneasy. Mrs. McCarter had been in the habit of closing the shutters at the back of the house every evening at 6 o'clock. The fact that all week the shutters remained open convinced Mrs. Keith that something was wrong. She notified the police. Patrolmen Kaiss and Tangney of the Western district forced open the door and found the old woman lying upon the floor beside a cold stove.
Evidence of Convulsions
Coroner Martin arrived shortly before noon and said that evidence pointed to the fact that Mrs. McCarter had died in convulsions. The room was almost destitute of furniture containing simply a stove, a broken lamp and a chair in which the neighbors said the woman used to sleep. A crust of bread was found upon the table. Hunger may have added to the pangs of disease before death came. In one corner of the room was a small box, tightly locked. This was found to contain $19 in bills and a number of papers. Odd coins found in the room brought the amount of cash to a total of $21.36.
A room at 736 Pierce street occupied by a negro family revealed a curious hoard of relics belonging to Mrs. McCarter. These, it is said, are of practically no value. This room she had rented for 30 years or more and for more than a quarter of a century had used it for a storeroom.
Had $300 In Savings Bank
Coroner Martin stated last night that he had learned that Mrs. McCarter had about $300 in a savings bank and that an administrator would probably be appointed. This money is part of $400 left her by the late Miss Eliza McGall by whom she was employed as a companion.
Among her neighbors Mrs. McCarter was considered to be a mystery, and some whispered that she had a small fortune hidden away. This however was not found. She had been living in the house in which she died about 30 years.
Shortly after the body was found a woman appeared in front of the house with a basket filled with food. It had been her weekly custom to carry gifts to Mrs. McCarter whom, she said, she had known 25 years. She had not learned of the aged woman's death until she arrived at the basement door.
"While my mother and I have known Mrs. McCarter many years," she said, "we knew little of her history. She was proud and only accepted our gifts because we were old friends."
Husband Dead Many Years
Mrs. Ann F. Bouchat, 746 Pierce street said that she had been a friend of Mrs. McCarter for 60 years.
"When we were both young," she said, "we lived on Preston Street. Her husband was alive then, and they seemed to be well off. Forty seven years ago they moved into this block, and shortly afterward her husband died and was buried in Baltimore Cemetery. She had a daughter, who died just before she was graduated from the Western High School. She was only 17 years old and her death seemed to affect her mother greatly. Of Mrs. McCarter's early history, however, I know nothing."
Mrs. Maggie McCauley, another neighbor, added a few details to the pathetic history of the old woman. Mrs. McCarter she said was a member of the St. Barnabas Protestant Episcopal Church. Mrs. McCauley characterized her a being kind and reserved.
Mrs. C. A. Thompson of Relay, who owned the house in which Mrs. McCarter died, will have her buried in the Baltimore Cemetery.

After the investigation Saturday by Coroner Martin of the Western Police district, the body was taken in charge by Mrs. C. A. Thompson of Relay, Md. who is the owner of the home in which Mrs. McCarter lived. The disposal of Mrs. McCarter's property which includes several hundred dollars and many relics has not yet been decided upon. Much of the property was kept in a storage room in the home of a negro family at 734 Pierce street. It is reported that a niece of Mrs. McCarter is living in Washington, but her name is unknown.
