He was born sometime after 1781 according to the 1830 census, but War of 1812 records give his age as 35 which would make his birth year 1777.Court Record
Arthur McCarter is a people’s witness for his fellow apprentices John Tyson, and William Duke (but not James Murray) who complain of their master Charles Christian, a cabinet maker on 73 Broad with an auction store at 101 Water. Their indentures are canceled and they are discharged. Other witnesses are Peter Dougherty, Samuel Carter, Henry Banks, Robert Rowe, and William Delamark.(James Murray later testifies against James McCarter in the bastardy hearing.)

Arthur McCarter, carpenter, bought three lots, 80, 82, and 84, on the corner of Manhattan Street in Manhattanville for $135.00 from Robert Morris and Peter Bartine who were the assignees in disposing of the property of the indebted Ezekiel Smith. He and Cornelia lived here for the next 22 years. Manhattanville, also known as West Harlem, was one of Manhattan's first suburbs and sat at Bloomingdale Road and Manhattan Street (now Broadway and 125th).Religion

AN ACT for the relief of Fernando Wood.
Passed February 27, 1849, by a two-third vote.
The People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:
1. All the estate and interest of the people of this state, acquired by escheat by the death of Arthur McCarter, deceased, in and to all the certain lot, piece or parcel of land, situate, lying and being in the twelfth (late ninth) ward of the city of New York, formerly the property of Richard Somerindyke, deceased, mentioned and described in a certain conveyance therefor, executed by Cornelia McCarter and William McCarter, dated the twelfth day of August, in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight, [12 Aug 1848] to Fernando Wood, and recorded in the office of the register of the city and county of New-York, in liber number five hundred and eight in conveyances, page three hundred and sixty-seven, on the fifteenth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight; and also all the estate and interest of the people of this state, acquired as aforesaid, in and to all that certain other piece or parcel of land, situate in the twelfth (late ninth) ward of the city of New York, formerly belonging to Richard Somerindyke, deceased, and commonly called and known as McCarter's lane, mentioned and described in a certain other conveyance, executed by the said Cornelia McCarter and William McCarter, to the said Fernando Wood, bearing the date twelfth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight, and recorded in the office of the register of the city and county of New York, in liber number five hundred and eight of conveyances, page three hundred and sixty-five, on the fifteenth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight, are hereby released to and vested in the said Fernando Wood, his heirs and assigns forever; subject, however, to any incumbrances thereon, made by the said Arthur McCarter, deceased, and by the said Cornelia McCarter, his widow, before the conveyance thereof to the said Fernando Wood.
2. Nothing contained in this act shall affect the rights of any creditor of the said Arthur McCarter of Cornelia McCarter, nor the title of any citizen of the United States to the premises above mentioned, or any part of the same.
