Carroll Peyton Barton

BARTON, Carroll Peyton "C.P.," of the Masonic Home of Virginia, formerly of Dunnsville, Va., died on April 28, 2010. He was born on January 8, 1921 in Salem, Va., the son of Walter Greer and Daisy Mullins Barton.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy U. Barton; a son, Carroll Peyton Barton Jr. of Alexandria; two daughters, Dorothy E. Barton of Arlington and Truitt B. Allcott and her husband, William Allcott, of Richmond; a granddaughter, Catherine C. Iwicki and her husband, Mathew Iwicki, of Sammamish, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Mathew and Elizabeth Iwicki, also of Sammamish, Wash.
He is also survived by two half-sisters, Norma Baer of New Freedom, Pa., and Joyce Rigdon of Arville, Pa.; and two half-brothers, Edwin Barton of Fawn Grove, Pa., and Roger Barton of Baltimore.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Lanthin Barton; and a grandson, Peyton Randolph Cunningham.
C.P. was educated in public schools in Southwest Virginia and Maryland and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in May 1940. He served on the Coast Guard Cutter Bibb from 1940 to 1945 and retired from the Coast Guard with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.
For many years, he and his partner, John Ware, operated Barton & Ware, Inc., in Tappahannock. A 32nd Degree Mason and former member of Acca Temple Shrine, C.P. was twice past master of Arlington Lodge, No. 102 AF&AM and served as District Deputy Grand Master of Virginia for the 11th Masonic District. During his 60 years as a Mason, C.P. mentored and taught literally hundreds of Masons.
He was a member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church and American Legion Post 64 in Tappahannock. In retirement, he remained active in the Masons and the American Legion, and never missed a reunion of his former shipmates on the Bibb.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Masonic Home Chapel, 4101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, Va. 23223. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests the donations be made in C.P.&s memory to the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, Va. 23223, or to St. Margaret&s School, 444 Water Lane, Post Office Box 158, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.
