Obituary of Dorothy Edna Umphlett Barton

BARTON, Dorothy "Dot" Edna Umphlett, of the Masonic Home, Richmond, formerly of "Woodland," in Dunnsville, Va., died on September 5, 2014, after a long illness.

Dot was born on March 26, 1923 to Willie L. and Daisy Mullen Umphlett of Gates County, N.C. She grew up in Holland, Va., and after high school moved to Portsmouth, Va. to work in the war effort, where she met young Coast Guardsman, Carroll Peyton Barton. Dot and Carroll were married on July 2, 1943 and after the war settled in Dunnsville, where they raised their family.

Dot was known for her love of antiques, the restoration of "Woodland," as well as her energetic spirit and talent for southern cooking.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carroll; son, Carroll Peyton Barton Jr.; grandson, Peyton Randolph Cunningham; and brothers, Truitt, Earl, Stanley and Tommy Umphlett.

She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy E. Barton of Arlington, Va., and Truitt Barton Allcott and her husband, William Allcott, of Richmond; granddaughter, Catherine Cunningham Iwicki and her husband, Matt; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Matthew Iwicki, all of Seattle, Wash.; sisters, Sara Hawkins of Lumberton, N.C., Jean Overton of Ahoskie, N.C. and Nancy Bannerman of Houston, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Her family expresses their deep gratitude to the nurses, aides and staff of the Masonic Home of Virginia for their loving and dedicated care during Dot's last years. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at the Masonic Home of Virginia Chapel, 4101 Nine Mile Rd., Henrico, Va. 23223, with Pastor David Donahue of Beale Memorial Baptist Church officiating. A reception will follow the service. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Central Virginia Food Bank would greatly honor Dot's desire that no one ever left her table hungry.
