Individual Details

William GREER

(Abt 1710 - Aft 1785)

William was born in Baltimore County, Maryland and married his wife, Mary Fitch, there in about 1732. William and Mary had nine children -- William, James, Shadrack, John, Aquilla, Benjamin, Moses, Mary, and Walter -- most of whom were born in Maryland. Sometime between 1746 and 1750 the family moved to Bedford County, Virginia where they started accumulating land and slaves.

William served Bedford County as a Justice of the Peace, member of the Legislature, and was the presiding judge for 15 years. At about age 65, he joined in the American Revolution serving as a Captain in the Militia under Colonel Calloway.

William and Mary both died sometime after 1785 in what had, by that time, become Franklin County, Virginia.
