William GREER
(Abt 1732 - 19 Sep 1802)
William was born in Maryland but came to Bedford County, Virginia as a teenager. In 1850 he married Sarah Freeland and they had six children born in Bedford County between 1751 and 1765.
His name is recorded as having 195 acres of land on the Staunton River, July 5, 1774. He had 420 acres in Franklin County, applied for December 5, 1799, granted February 18, 1802, his name appearing with Skelton Taylor.
William was neutral during the American Revolution and after the war refused to take the oath of the Commonwealth. Consequently on March 22, 1781, he was led to Henry County Court (Franklin County was then a part of Henry) by Sheriff Hughes who had charged him with "suspicion of conspiracy against the State of America."
The court appointed a jury which found William guilty of the charge and fined him a sum of 500 pounds and costs. He posted bond for 10,000 pounds on the condition that "he be of good behavior towards American states in the future."
In 1788 William and Sarah and some of their adult children left their corner of Bedford County and settled on 95 acres on the waters of Wilson Creek in Grayson County, Virginia.
William died there on September 19, 1802 and was buried in the David Pugh Cemetery near Grant, Virginia. In his will, written September 19, 1802, he names his wife Sarah and children Shadrack, Aquilla, Elizabeth, Rachel, Sarah and Hannah. To son Aquilla he bequeathed "all and singular the plantation whereon I now live."
