Departure

On the Susan and Ellen -It is to be presumed that Puritans friends or acquaintances of Bulkeley took these boys separately to the shipping office and gave the impression that they were members of their own household. -No doubt the long drawn out enrollments and the lack of effort to standardize spelling of the name were reflections of the family’s attempt to board the ship without being apprehended. GM Vol 1 page 464-.

Arrival

Emigrated for religious freedom: he was silenced by Archbishop Laud for his unwillingness to conform with the requirements of the Anglican Church.

Peter Bulkeley is considered the founder of Concord, or one of the founders. He led a community of people to Concord and set up his church there.

Residence

After the Ecclesiastical Council, 'trials and discouragements' continued by 1644 Bulkeleys and John Jones split, Thomas and Daniel Bulkeley went with John Jones and several families to Fairfield. Conn. Mr. Bulkeley continued to minister to the Concord church, with thirty families, gradually the town began to prosper.

Death

"I've reached the evening of my mortal day. A sluggish mass of clay is this my frame."

Education

BA at St John's Cambridge in 1608, MA at Oxford in 1610. "A most excellent scholar, a very well read person".

Burial

"Peter Bulkeley B.D. 1582 - 1659 a nonconformist to the English Church. Emigrated to this Country for Religious Liberty. He arrived in Cambridge, 1634 and was a leader for those resolute and self-denying Christians, who soon after went further into the Woods, and settled on the Plantation in Musketaquid. He died in Concord, Mass. March 9th, 1659 in his 77th year. The family motto 'neither rashly nor timidly' was eminently characteristic of the American family."
