Joseph Jenckes

(October 12, 1632 - January 4, 1717)

Joseph Jenckes was born in England, came to America. In Pawtucket RI he built the first house, probably and definitely the first forge and sawmill. He was a blacksmith and active in his community: assistant Justice, General Assembly Representative, on the jury and council and a tax assessor. He married Elizabeth Ballard they had 3 sons and 6 daughters. He is buried in the Govr Joseph Jenckes Lot, now defunct. His son Joseph was long time Govr of Rhode Island.
