Individual Details

Esther Hester Ballard

(October 28, 1632 - January 4, 1717)

Esther Ballard sailed from London to New England in 1635, on the James with a younger brother and their parents. She was 2 years old in 1635. The family lived first in Massachusetts. At about age 18 Esther married Joseph Jenckes in Providence, RI on Nov 6, 1652. On this, her marriage day, Esther was one of 4 people fined for wearing silver or silver lace- really. She was probably dressed up for wedding and wearing a pretty silver necklace, maybe given to her by her mom. In the early days of New England wearing silver was a crime for plain citizens, those making less than 200 pounds , odd but true. Esther and Joseph had at least three children, one of them Joseph Jenckes, future long term Gov'r of Rhode Island.
