Joseph Jenckes
(1599 - March 16, 1683)
Joseph Jenckes was born in England, probably Hammersmith a borough of London in 1599. He was an ironworker or blacksmith. His wife Mary died in England. He left his boys with their grandparents and sailed to America, possibly giving his son Joseph directions to follow to America when he was older. In America Joseph earned patents for a water mill, sawmill and a machine for making scythes and other edged tools. His burial place is unknown but at this Find a Grave site is a memorial plaque for him, his son and grandson, all Josephs the grandson being the Govr of Rhode Island for many years.
