Charles Henry Angell

(1825 - 1909)

Charles Angell was born in New York to Dexter Angell and Clementine Benight. Charles had an older sister Elizabeth and a younger sister Delia. The Angell’s lived in Prairieton Indiana for a time, some of Clementine’s family was there. Charles’s mother died in 1847, his father Dexter was frequently away from home and remarried quickly. Delia and maybe Charles then lived with sister Elizabeth, by 1850 Charles had moved west to Iowa. He had some Angell family in the Butler county area. By 1852 Charles was married to Eleanor Black, they may have married in Illinois. They had at least two children, Leander and Mary Alice. Charles’s younger sister Delia left her sister Elizabeth’s Indiana home and came to Charles’s Iowa home, maybe to help with the children. Charles was a farmer. In 1854 Charles inherits a quarter of his father’s estate which may have been substantial. In 1870 Charles’s 120 acre farm is valued at $4800 and keeps 4 horses, 5 milk cows, 5 other cows, 41 sheep, 17 swine. The farm produces 240 bushels of wheat, 350 of Indian corn, 180 of oats; wool 146 pounds, potatoes 30, butter 150, 40 bales of hay, 40 gallons of molasses.
