W. Robert FRENCH
(5 Jun 1805 - 1 Jan 1868)
From The Emporia News, January 10, 1868 (Emporia, Kansas):
"Sudden Death. We regret to learn that Robert French, an old citizen of Rock Creek, Chase county, Kansas was suddenly killed on New Year's day. He was hauling corn from the farm of Dr. Leonard [Rock Creek is west of Bazaar, Chase County and Dr. M. R. Leonard was a Postmaster there], four miles from his residence. He had the lines fastened around the hub of the right fore wheel of his wagon. He had about finished loading his wagon in the evening when his horses took fright and ran through a post and rail fence. In his endeavor to unloose the lines he was dragged along by the team, trying to stop them. When going through the fence at a rapid rate a rail was thrown with the end towards him, which struck him just over the heart, mashing in the breast bone and crushing his heart. He lived but a few moments. He was found next morning in the prairie grass, near where the team had gone through the fence. He was a good citizen and an upright Christian man, and was universally beloved by his neighbors. His age was sixty years and he leaves a wife, son and two daughters to mourn his loss."
