taken from the Dansville Advertiser, Thursday, April 14, 1864 edition:
" The Genesee Republican reports the death of Jehiel Freeman, an old resident of York, who died on the 31st ult, in the 61st year of his age."
Obituary
per Livingston Republican dated Apr 7, 1864 pg. 2, col. 6:
DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT-
"For some time past we have been almost weekly called upon to chronicle the death of some one of the early settlers of this section, and a few years more will suffice to remove from our midst a class of men, who, have done very much to make the Genesee Valley what it is. The pioneers of this section were a hardy race of men, and a large majority of them have already outlived the average length of time of man's days on earth. 
This week we are called on to notice the decease of Jehiel Freeman which occurred at his residence in York on Thursday last, in the 61st year of his age, of congestion of the Lungs. The deceased was born in Sennett,Cayuga Co, where he continued to reside until he was thirteen years of age, when he came to this section, where he continued to reside. For several years he was in the employ of Gen. Wadsworth, as an out-door man, and resided in this village. About ten years age he removed to the town of York. He was a man of large public spirit, and Agriculture in him had a warm and enthusiastic friend. Possessed of an iron constitution, he braved all sorts of weather, caring little for himself, until disease has so firmly seated itself, that it could not be expelled. The deceased was an upright, honorable man, and has gone on to his long home lamented by all with whom he was acquainted. The funeral was attended on Sunday last, and the large number present was only a slight attestation of the respect and esteem in which he was held by those who were acquainted with him."
