Charles MCGOON
( - Bef 1825)
His surname may have been Magoon.
It is without any question that as of 2011, very little is known of Charles that is substantiated by records. The search continues. I've written some of what we are researching.
Charles has been referred to as Charles David, David Charles, and Charles Henry. One of the problems is the recording of the children's birth dates. One researcher has Charles dying just prior to son David's birth, another has him dying just prior to the birth of son Lewis. Charles was to have died of wounds sustained in the War of 1812 (June 1812 to Spring 1815) but records don't substantiate that. He was to have died in the Battle of Lundy Lane near Niagara in 1814 which was a part of the War of 1812. Records of the New York State Historical Society indicate more soldiers died from disease than wounds. There are no marked graves associated with this battle and the men were buried in trenches with a marker at each end. Only officers had their names recorded. It is unfortunate but there is no record of his service and if we knew when his service was we still don't know when he would have died as a result of the wounds. He married a Native American (in some research, referred to as a Lamanite. Lamanite is a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) term for Native American, which leads some to believe that all or parts of this family have Mormon origins).
Another account which comes from the files of William (Will) Nelson McGoon who did a lot of research, kept in contact with many McGoon descendants into the 1970's, all initiated through the memories of his father William Henry McGoon, a grandson of Charles McGoon. In January 1970, Will writes, " David H. McGoon's father, Charles MacGoon [sic] was born in, or near, Glascow, Scotland. He came to Canada as a young man and married Miss Bray, a girl of Indian descent. It has been said by some of Uncle David's tribe that Charles McGoon left a family in Scotland. I doubt it, since he was still a young man when he was killed in the War of 1812 and had a ten year old daughter and a daughter six years old. There are probably two Scottish clans in America named McGoon. The tale starts with the McGoons of Orlando, Florida - a doctor McGoon and his daughter, Betty." His account then focuses on the family of David Henry McGoon.
