Individual Details
Artemus C. STEVENS
(10 Jan 1816 - 19 Mar 1863)
Artemus owned land in Chittenden County, Vermont in 1836. He resided in Ohio in 1843 where he and Amartha were married. He and his wife resided in Ohio until 1856 then moved to Jackson County, Iowa on a farm in Richland Township near Cottonville, Iowa which was a small settlement near LaMotte, Iowa.
Two resources provide different death dates: 19 March 1863 and 27 June 1863. Artemus died in the Civil War.
Stan Morgan provides that "after the death of his son Jonas, Artemus enlisted in Company I, 31st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers, mustered in on 8-21-1862 at Davenport, Iowa. He died at Vicksburg, Miss. on 3-19-1863 from chronic diarrhea on the Floating Hospital Ship "Nashville" at the beginning of the siege of Vicksburg. He was buried at Cottonville cemetery, Iowa, located near the present town of Andrew, Iowa."
Extracts from Our Stevens Heritage:
"Mr. and Mrs. Artimus C. Stevens were living in Iowa when the Civil War broke out. Their oldest son, Jonas, enlisted in the Union Army when he was only 17 years. old. He died in Service the next year on June 27th, 1862, in a tragic accident when, through no fault of his own, drying powder was exploded and he was burned so badly he lived only a few hours.
His father, Artimus, became so grief-stricken and so unconsolable on learning of his oldest son's death that he was determined to enlist also to fight against the South. Just a month and a day later, on July 28th, 1862 at Andrew, Iowa, Artimus enlisted in Company I, 31st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers. He was mustered into the Union Army on Aug. 21, 1862 at Davenport, Ia. It was a sad parting with his family as his youngest child, Alfred, was only four months old. However, at that time no one expected that the Civil War would last very long.
But seven months later, the father, too, gave his life for the Union cause. A letter sent to his wife from Captain John Downing, dated at Walnut Hill, Vicksburg, Mississippi and also U. S. Adjutant General's records show that Artimus C. Stevens died on the Floating Hospital Ship "Nashville" on March 19, 1863 of chronic diarrhea at the beginning of the seige of Vicksburg.
His body was brought back to Iowa and he is buried in the Cottonville Cemetery, located near the present town of Andrew, Iowa.......
........The next year, Jamier Edmund, the second oldest son was 18 years of age and he, too, began begging to enlist in the Army. A sense of patriotism and a desire to help prevailed and Jamier went on Oct. 3, 1864 to replace his father and brother in the Service. So anxious was Jamier to join that he took a draftee's place in order to leave sooner. (In later years Jamier had told his son, William, that after all the coaxing it was the hardest thing to leave his mother and go.)
The courageous Mrs. Stevens with her six children under fifteen years of age was left on the farm, where she bravely carried on her duties, working to support them the best she could. Jamier did return safely from the War to help his mother maintain the family."
