Thomas, Sr. WHETMORE

(1615 - 11 Dec 1681)

There are several spellings of his surname in many records but this writer uses the spelling Whetmore as that is the spelling Thomas used in his last will and testament.
From Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England: "THOMAS, Middletown, who spelt his name Wetmore, as have all the descend. s. of the first John, m. 16 Dec 1645, Sarah, d. of John Hall, had John, bapt. 6 Sept. 1646; Eliz. b. 1648; Mary, 1649; Sarah, bapt. 20 Apr. 1651, d. young; Thomas, 19 Oct. 1652; Hannah, 13 Feb. 1654; Samuel, 10 Sept. 1655; Izrahiah, 8 Mar. 1657; Beriah, 2 Nov. 1658; Nathaniel, 21 Apr 1661; Joseph, 5 Mar. 1663; Sarah, again, 27 Nov. 1664. His w. d. 7 Dec. foll. and he m. 3 Jan. 1667, Mary Akinson, wid. of Luke, and d. of deac. Richard Platt, had Josiah, 29 Mar. 1668; and Mehitable, 17 June 1669, and his w. d. the same day. He m. 8 Oct. 1673, Catharine Roberts, had Benjamin, 27 Nov. 1674; Abigail, 6 Nov. 1678; and Hannah, 4 Jan. 1681. He d. 11 Dec. foll. and his wid. d. 13 Oct. 1693."
From the Wetmore Genealogy: "....Came to America in 1635...The first mention that we find of his name in the Colonial records, is in the Wethersfield Town records in 1639-40 as owner of certain lands......He subsequently removed to Hartford, at what time we have no data for determing, unless it was, at, or about, the time the diffuculty arose among the colonists at Wethersfield in 1640-41, which caused many of them to disperse; a large number of whom removed with their pastor, Richard Denton, to Stamford.....Our Thomas Whitmore was living at Hartford at that time [Note: 1647] and had children baptized there in 1646, and 1648. Wm. S. Porter in his "Historical Notices of Connecticut," p. 41, says, that a John and Thomas Whitmore owned land in Hartford in 1646......We have been unable to find any trace of the English ancestry of Thomas Whitmore......It may be well to note in this connection, that there has been a generally received tradition that our ancestor came from Wales.... In regard to the surname of our ancestor, being Whitmore, it is so written whereever we have found it recorded in the Colonial records. [Note: examples recorded were from 1639 to 1681]... At what particular time the family changed the spelling of their name, we have been unable to discover; are led, however, to think that the children of the third (possibly some few of the second0 in part, and the descendants of the fourth generation very generally adopted the name of Wetmore."
This writer excerted only highlights of what is contained in The Wetmore Family Genealogy publication. It is a very lenghty document and this writer can provide some of the pages but in 2009 the Wetmore Family Genealogy was available on-line at Google Books.
