John WHITMORE

From The Atkins Chronicles: "Whitmore immigrant, John, who came to New England about 1635 with his five children, all of whom were born in England. John Whitmore was later brutally murdered by Mohegan Indians, according to the family history, in October of 1648."
From Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England: "JOHN, Wethersfield 1639, but in what part of Mass. he had first liv. is not found, but prob. he brot. from Eng. all the five ch. he ever had, Thomas, b. a. 1615; Francis, a. 1625; and John, a. 1627; beside two ds. Ann, said to be b. a. 1621; and Mary, a. 1623; rem. a. 1641 Stamford, and was one of the first sett. At S. he was in good repute, m. a wid. Jessup, was chos. a rep. to New Haven assemb. 1647, and murd. by Ind. in Oct. 1648. The act was not a case of private hatred, but seems to have been the deed of the whole tribe, and the Col. of Conn. was moved to unite with that of N. H. in a just revenge. See Trumbull, Col. Rec. I. 197."
From Stephen Clason of Stamford, Connecticut, in 1654 : and Some of His Descendants: "The town had not as yet received its name, but in April, one thousand six hundred forty-two, Mr. Mitchell and John Whitmore were accepted from "Rippowam" as members of the New Haven court, and at this session the name Stamforde was legally-substituted for that of Rippowam [Note: some record as Rippowams]."
From Wetmore Genealogy: "John Whitmore was of Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1640, and in the town records of deeds, vol. I, p. 121, is the following entry: 'The 2d month and 5 daie 1641, The lands of John Whitmore lying in Wethersfield on Connecticut river, One piece whereon his house and barne standeth containing twelve acres and half more or less. The ends abut against the Common or landing place, and part against the house of Robert Batte, west, and ye meadow Francis Norton east. The side against ye lands of Ro. and Tho. Curtice north, and ye lands of Tho. Whitmore, Francis Norton, Mr. Denton, John Gossope and Tho. Coleman south.' John Whitmore removed to Stamford in 1641, with Rev. Richard Denton and many others who had been settlers at Watertown, Mass. He was a man of considerable importance."
