Notes

Military

He enlisted in the RAF on the 5th of April 1940 and went through basic training at Uxbridge. He was promoted to corporal in 1941. On June 7th 1944, D-Day (day2), he was attached to the Durham Light Infantry and went ashore at Gold Beach near Arromanches in Normandy. He was part of a team with the responsibility for preparing forward aircraft landing sites. He spent time at Bayeux and was billeted in the Cathedral there. He was wounded in the leg at Arnhem in the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 and was hospitalized at the 8th RAF General Hospital in Brussels (L'Hopital St Giles). He was repatriated for treatment at a north London hospital. He was discharged from the RAF on the 19th of October 1945. He was awarded the 1939/45 Star and the France and Germany Star. His service number was 920585 and was serving with the 5202 Squadron RAF when he was discharged.
