Her mother Mary died in 1929 at the age of 48 when Rose was 12 years old. She started nurse training when she first went to Caterham but then changed her career and became a cook at St Lawrence Hospital, Caterham. She ran the bicycle shop in the Westway, Caterham with her husband Tommie for almost fifty years. Her surname was later spelt SMITH.
