Miscellaneous

The South Wales United Choirs competed for the prize of £1,000 at Crystal Palace. The choristers, numbering 450, they were drawn for Llanelli, Swansea, Cwmafan, Maesteg, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr, Dowlais, and the Aberdare and Rhondda Valleys. They were conducted by the gifted Mr. Griffith Rhys Jones, “Caradog” then aged 45 years and a publican in Treorchy, formerly a blacksmith at Aberdare. They performed the following selections, “By slow degrees,” (Handel), “Then round about the starry throne,” (Handel). “In tears of grief,” (Bach). “The night is departing,”(Mendelssohn),“Dixit Dominus,” (Leo), “In exitu Israel,” (Wesley, S.) and “All creatures now are merry-minded,” (Bennett). Mr D. Bowen (Dowlais) was at the harmonium, and among the vocalists taking a leading part were, Messrs D. Emlyn Evans, D. Rosser, solicitor (Aberdare), D. Griffiths, D. Davies (Dewi Alaw), Alaw Ddu, Eos Morlais and Thomas Williams (Pontypridd).

They were married by license by the vicar, David Williams. The witnesses were Emily's brother John Roger Ball and Sarah Guest. Both Richard and Emily signed their names.
