The following item appeared in the Hammond Times of August 26, 1937, Page 8:"Miss Harriet Kraus has returned from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. where she was enrolled for the summer session. She will reside this year with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Isaacson who have moved to a new home in the south part of Hammond [sic]."

The following article appeared in the Hammond Times on October 24, 1940:"Announce Engagement
Miss Harriet Ann Kraus' dinner party last evening was planned supposedly to honor several of her friends, but instead was to announce her engagement to Leslie M. Bernick. The romantic news was revealed during the dinner serving at the Ultra Moderne Tearoom, where Miss Kraus and her mother, Mrs Esther Kraus, entertained the bride-elect's Aunts, closest friends and Eta Tau Delta sorority sisters. In the tiny blue-baskets filled with yellow roses at each place were cards to announce the betrothal. The couple has chosen no date for the wedding.
For the announcement party, Mr. Bernick's mother, Mrs. A. Bernick of St. Paul was present, and like Miss Kraus and her mother had a corsage to wear, a gift from the young man. Mr. Bernick, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernick, of St. Paul, has become acquainted in this region since corning here to be employed in the metallurgical department at the Inland Steel Company. He resides at 594 Forsythe Avenue.
Miss Kraus is unusually well known through her teaching in the Hammond school system and as member of numerous organizations. She has been a teacher for the past five years at the Maywood special school and prior to that taught for one year at Lafeyette School. Mr. Bernick's fiancee received her bachelor of science degree at Indiana State Teachers College and has had advanced work in special education at Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore and at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The bride elect is one of the founders of the Young People's League in Hammond and is active in her sorority group. Eta Tau Delta.
Mr. Bernick received both his bachelor of science and master's degree from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Sigma fraternity. At the present time he is doing work toward his doctorate."
Marriage
The following article appeared in the Hammond Times of June 23, 1941:"Harriet Ann Kraus Wed at Temple Yesterday
Beneath a canopy of ferns and white peonies Miss Harriet Ann Kraus and Leslie M. Bernick stood to repeat their marriage vows in the ceremony that took place yesterday at noon in the Beth-El Temple. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Esther Kraus, 127 West Elizabeth Street, and is a well-known teacher in the Hammond school system. Mr. Bernick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bernick of Minneapolis who were present for the service.
Rabbi A. Feinberg read the rites promptly at noon in a ceremony the couple's many friends and relatives had been invited to witness. Mrs. Arthur Weiss played the organ background of music for the wedding and accompanied Mrs. A. Linville when she sang "I Love You Truly" and "Because."
Ushers for the service were Michael Tannenbaum and Maury Juster who were Sigma Alpha Sigma fraternity brothers and roommates of the groom when all attended the University of Minnesota. Solly Bernick, who is the grooms 's identical twin brother, came from Minneapolis to serve as his best man.
Miss Ruth Cohen was the only attendant for the bride and appeared in a pastel pink dress with brown accessories. Her corsage was of pink and white roses. On her wedding day, Miss Kraus wore a street length gown of powder blue with a flattering torso length jacket. With her navy blue accessories, she included a heart-shaped hat of powder blue with navy veil. To harmonize, with her ensemble the bride wore an orchid corsage.
For the ceremony both Mrs. Kraus & Mrs. Bernick wore white gowns and had corsages of red roses. About 85 guests gathered at Phil Shmidts for the dinner that was served to members of the families. From out of town were the bride's brother, Vern Kraus and his fiance, Miss. Beatrice Polster, of Cleveland and her grandfather M, Nagel , also, of Cleveland.
Wearing a yellow and brown ensemble; the bride left with her husband for a honeymoon in the north woods of Wisconsin. Upon their return they will reside at 124 1/2 Sibley Street until the home they are planning is built. Mrs. Bernick received her degree from Indiana State Teachers College and then took advanced work at John Hopkins and Western Reserve Universities. She has been teaching at the Maywood special school for several years. The bride helped to found the Young Peoples League in Hammond and is also active in the Eta Tau Delta sorority. Mr. Bernick received both his Bachelor of Science and his Master's degree from the University of Minnesota and at the present is doing work toward his Doctorate. He is a research metallurgist at the Inland Steel Company."

In 1952, 1954 and 1956 he was listed as a research engineer at Inland Steel, and they were living at 400 Webb St. in Calumet City, Illinois.In 1958 and 1959 she was listed as a supervisor at the Faith School for Retarded Children. They were still living at 400 Webb St.

Mrs. Leslie M. Bernick of 400 Webb St. Calumet City will be installed as president of the Indiana State Association of B'nai B'rith Women tonight at Temple Beth-El of Gary.
The new president was also president of the Hammond Bnai Brith Women, served as area field consultant and was elected as a member of the board of directors of district 2.
Mrs. Bernick is a past president of the Lincoln School PTA and a member of the Calumet City, Burnham, and Lansing PTA Council. She has taught at the Haven School for Retarded Children, has been an active member of the Girl Scouts, a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and a member of Hadassah and the Beth-El Temple Sisterhood."

What the Faith School Will Mean to the Community" is the topic; of a talk to be given by Mrs. Leslie a public meeting Tuesday night of the Calumet City Council for Retarded Children. The council is establishing the Faith School for Retarded Children with classes to be held in the Memorial Park building this fall. Mrs. Bernick is a graduate of the Indiana State Teachers' College. She studied special education and sight saving at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and took courses in the psychology of mentally retarded children at Johns Hopkins University."

Long-time Island resident Harriet A. Bernick has been honored by the Mental Health Association in Carolina as its 1988 Volunteer of the year. The award is presented annually to the individual in South Carolina who, over a period of a time, has given outstanding service to the mental health cause. The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Mrs. Bernick during the annual meeting of the Mental Health Association of Beaufort-Jasper Counties at Mariner's Inn.
According to the announcement 'During her tenure as president of the Beaufort chapter, Mrs. Bernick's leadership advanced the cause of mental health in the Low Country and the state. The Lending Library of self-help publications was placed in the local mental health clinic to assist clients. After-care activities emerged enabling mental health clients and others to interact with volunteers in returning to community living. And under Mrs. Bernick's guidance, significant financial support from the local MHA helped in the establishment of Hospice Volunteers of Hilton Head and Genesis Home, a residential treatment home for emotionally disabled teen-age boys in the county. And through the years her committee work and advocacy efforts have impacted on those with mental illnesses, as well as the mentally retarded and their families.'
Mrs. Bernick resides with her husband, Leslie, in Palmetto Dunes."

The following obit appeared in the February 12, 2008, Las Vegas Review Journal:"Harriet Kraus Bernick, 94, of Henderson, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008. She was born March 15, 1913, in Cleveland, and resided in Nevada since 2000. Harriet was a retired school director for a special needs school. She was founder of Calumet City School for Special Education in 1957. Harriet was the past Indiana State president of B'nai B'rith Women. She was the chair of Beaufort County, S.C. Disability and Special Needs Board (1991-1995). She also received the Humanitarian Award from L.A.R.K. an association for retarded citizens in 1988. Harriet is survived by her daughter, Helene (George) Levine of Ossining, N.Y.; son, Emil Lee (Joanne) Bernick of Henderson, granddaughter, Dana(Mark) Archambeau; grandsons, Aaron (Claudine Gray) Levine, Ethan (Chardie Baird) Bernick and Joshua Bernick; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Justin, Kyle and Jenna Archambeau; great-grandson, Cameron Levine; and sisters-in-law, Doris Munic of Henderson and Ellen Bernick of Las Vegas. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 Eldorado Lane. Donations may be made to the Special Olympics or the American Kidney Foundation."
