The 1923 Hammond City Directory lists a grocery called Kraus and Miller (Emil J. Kraus and Joseph Miller, his brother in law) at 6 State St. and 401 State St. in West Hammond, Illinois. Joseph Kraus (Emil Kraus's brother) lived at 6 State and Emil Kraus lived at 401 State. Joseph Miller was also president of the Crown Candy Co. The 1928 Hammond City Directory lists Emil Kraus as a salesman renting at 413 157th St. (This is the same address that Joseph Kraus eventually bought and where Leslie and Harriet Bernick later rented). Joseph Miller is listed as store fixtures at 593 Hohman. Fred Kraus and Sons Store Fixtures and Supplies was at 482-484 Hohman.
