Notes
Birth
According to the information on her death certificate, which was given by Max Nagel (residing at 2339 E. 57th Street Cleveland, Ohio), Fannie was born in December 1872 and immigrated in 1897/98. Max Nagel also stated that she was born in Kief, Russia/Poland; her father's name was Benjamin Moshontz and was born in Kief, Russia/Poland; and her mother (maiden name unknown) was also born in Kief, Russia/Poland. This is the only place where Kief is mentioned. All other evidence leads to Ostroleka, Krasnocielc and/or Warsaw. So, we have another mystery although Kiev is highly unlikely.Immigration
The 1920 census gives 1890 as the year of immigration. The 1900 and 1910 censuses give 1897 as the year of immigration.Census (family)
They were renting a house at 82R Irving St. in Cleveland Ohio. Max Nagel had been born in May 1869 in Poland/Russia. He was married in 1887 to Fanny Celia Moshontz who had been born in April 1869. By 1900 they had had five children only two of whom survived, Bennie, born in Aug. 1889 and Esther, born in Mar. 1891. Max Nagel immigrated to the U.S. in 1891 leaving Fannie and the two kids in Poland. They came over in 1897. Max was a cloak maker and out of work for two months in 1900. Fannie could not read or write in any language and could not speak English. Max could read and write and speak English.Census (family)
They were renting at 2318 E. 38th St. Their children and his brother Morris were living with them. They had had 7 children but only 4 were alive. Max was an alien and had immigrated in 1891; Fannie had immigrated with the two oldest kids in 1897. Bennie was naturalized. They were able to speak English. He could read and write; she could not. He was not out of work on April 15, 1910. He had been out of work for 4 weeks in 1909.Census (family)
The 1920 census indicates that Max and Fannie were renting at 4716 Scoville Ave. with Arthur and Pearl. Arthur had not attended school since Sept 1, 1919. Max was now 60 (?) and Fannie was 50. They both were naturalized (the dates are illegible) and Max immigrated in 1883 and Fannie in 1890. The census indicated that neither was able to speak English, they could read and write. In the 1900 and 1910 censuses he could. Their native language was Yiddish. He was working as a tailor.Death
She died from chronic nephritis, oedema and paralysis of the heart.Endnotes
