Lydia James “being far advanced in years” wrote her will at Lancaster in February 1764 (probate February 1776). She bequeathed to her well beloved brother Ebenezer Barker of Methuen the money that is already in his hands. Brother John James (likely brother of Lydia’s husband Joseph) of Southbury received all the real estate. Ruth Ballard daughter of Benjamin and Ruth Ballard of Lancaster received some household items. Lidia bequeathed “to my two sisters viz. Sarah Messer in Nottingham and Mehittabel Eaton in Methewin all the remainder of my personal estate to be equally divided between them.” Capt. Benjamin Ballard of Lancaster was named executor.1 These three named siblings were likely the only surviving of Lydia’s siblings in 1764.
