Miscellaneous
Warren and his brother Lowell grew up during the Great Depression (1929-1941) and the Dust Bowl (1930-1936). The brothers came to Montana from Nebraska to work on a threshing crew, which went from farm to farm to work the harvest. One of these farms was the Lehmann farm, where Warren met Lucille. For several years, Warren was in Nebraska during the winter and Montana during the summer. In July of 1942, Warren was drafted into the Army. A few months later, Lucille rode a troop train to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where they were married in an Army chapel on the base.Military
Warren was in the U.S. Army's 16th Armored Division and served in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia during World War II. The 16th Armored Divison was instrumental in liberating the city of Pilsen, Czekoslovakia at the end of the war.Marriage
The family lived in Nebraska after Warren came home from the war from 1946 until February of 1948. They moved to Montana where Warren was a ranchhand at the VanHaur Ranch near Hilger, Montana, from 1948-1949. He became a General Mills grain elevator manager and the family lived in Coffee Creek and Benchland. The Wittgows moved to Lewistown in 1959, where Warren worked at the Farmers Union, then was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired.Endnotes
