Ruby Hughes, 96, of Roberts died Saturday, January 22, at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond, where she had been a resident since 1988.
She was born in Highland on March 9, 1897, the daughter of Sydney and Minnie (Larson) Benoy.
She was three years old when her family moved to a farm near Dodgeville. When she was 11 years old, her family moved to a farm between Roberts and Hudson. She graduated from Roberts High School.
She was united in marriage to Almon Hughes on February 26, 1916. They farmed in Warren township until moving into the village of Roberts in 1957. Her husband was village president from 1959 to 1969.
She was a member of Roberts Congregatioal Church of Christ and was a member of the church choir for over 28 years. She was a member of Rebecca Lodge for over 50 years. She was also a member of Warren Homemakers and enjoyed playing cards and socializing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Almon, on Aoril 28, 1974; a daughter, Maxine Baier; a son Leslie; and four brothers, Marvin, Arthur, Clinton and Leon. She is survived by two sons, Oliver Hughes of Mesa, Arizona and Wendell of Seattle, Washington; a daughter, Marcella Hughes of Madison; a sister Elsie Lewis of Hammond; three brothers, Richard Benoy, Alton "Bill" Benoy, and Kenneth Benoy, all of Hudson; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.
Services were January 26 at Roberts Congregational United Church of Christ. Interment was in Willow River Cemetery, Hudson. Pallbearers were Chris Dedrickson, Richard Colbeth, Chris Colbeth and Paul Colbeth. Arrangements were with the Murphy Funeral Home.
