Two Grove City Young People Drowned
Accident at Diamond Lake Wherein Anna Dillner and Halbor Florin Meet Death
Grove City, Sept. 1--Monday afternoon the people of Grove City were shocked when the news reached here that Miss Anna Dillner and Halvor Florin had been drowned in Diamond Lake, and that Miss Jennie Nelson and Morris Elofson had almost met the same fate.
The accident happened while the above mentioned four were in bathing. Morris Elofson was rowing the boat and the others were holding on to its sides, being in the water. When they were about a hundred feet from shore, Elofson jumped out. This startled the others and Miss Dillner attempted to get into the boat. By this time the others had lost their presence of mind and all attempted to cleamber in, but the boat filled and losing their holds the parties, except Elofson, sank. Help was called for and Theodore Dillner, who was on shore, came out in a boat and with the assistance of Elofson managed to get Miss Nelson to shore. She was unconscious when taken out but soon revived. Miss Dillner's body was found within a few minutes and taken to shore. Her pulse was still beating but it grew fainter and fainter and soon life was extinct. It was about three hours later that Halvor Florin's body was recovered. The funerals of the unfortunate victims were held from their respective homes on Wednesdy, both being attended by large crowds.
Miss Anna Dillner was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Dilner, both deceased, and was 18 years, 6 months old. She was a graduate of the Litchfield high school of the class of '98; a bright girl of exceptional ability and a loving and fine disposition. The esteem in which she was held was shown by the profusion of flowers sent by friends and relatives. She was laid at rest by the side of her father and mother in Atwater. She leaves a brother, Theodore Dillner, and a number of friends and relatives.
Halvor Florin was 21 years, 3 months old, a young man of worth, giving promise of a life full of usefulness. He has lived his life here and was well and favorably known by all. The interment was made in the Norwegian cemetery. To mourn his loss are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Florin and a brother and sister. The sympathy of all are extended to the grief stricken relatives of both the young people, and also to their companions who witnessed their sad death.
The class of '98 Litchfield high school and Lieut. Dewey and many other friends from Litchfield were here Wednesday to attend Miss Dillner's funeral. There were many friends and relatives here from Decorah, Iowa, and other places to follow the remains of Halvor Florin to their last resting place.
