The son of Andrew Moe and Martha (unknown) supposedly born near Trondheim, Norway. Emigrated to the United States in 1883. Married Martha Engstrom ca. 1894 who was born in Sweden and emigrated in 1879 with her parents Daniel Engstrom and Martha Johnson. Gilbert and Martha were the parents of seven children: Albin/1894, Magnus/1896, Alma/1897, Oscar A./1900, John/1901, Evelyn/1911, Hilde/1913. In the 1900 census the family was living in New Richmond, St. Croix County, Wisconsin and Gilbert was a laborer on the railroad. By 1910 he had his own farm near Star Prairie, St. Croix County, Wisconsin. His death at age 91 was due to myocardial failure, generalized arteriosclerosis with carcinoma of the prostrate (clinically) contributing.
