History of Pine Street Grocery
The grocery store at the top of the steps on Second and Pine streets now operated by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Caudy, has seen many changes in the past 35 years.
Before the days of prohibition it was a saloon operated by the Hochstein brothers, Anthony and Joe. When the country went dry it was turned into a grocery store. In 1919 the store was taken over by the late J.E. Miller (father of Mrs. James C. Staberg) who operated it for three years. In those days the Omaha shops employed a greater number of men than at the present time and they all walked to work. As the store was always open at 6 o'clock in the morning, a lare percentage of the men stopped by for gloves, tobacco and candy bars, on their way to work. On pay days arrangements were made so the men could cash their checks on the way home from work. Some o them called it the "Pine Street Bank."
Before the underpass was put in the building stood further west. There was also a small houe next to it and back of it an ice house and coal shed, which were torn down when the building was moved to make way for the present underpass.
When Miller gave up the store for other business interests it was taken over by Charles Brown. . .
