James P. Fitzgerald
(9 Nov 1880 - 11 Dec 1933)
HSO, 14Dec1933, p1
James P. Fitzgerald, a widely known Hudson railroadman, died suddenly at his home at the corner of 6th and Orange streets, shortly after noon Monday. Mr. Fitzgerald collapsed in his garage while he was attempting to start his automobile. At first it was feared that carbon monoxide poisoning may have caused his death, but Dr. J. W. Livingstone, the attending physician, reported that death was probably due to a sudden heart attack, pointing out that the garage doors were open and that the car was not running at the time. "Over exertion while trying to get the car started probably brought on the heart attack," the doctor stated.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Elroy on November 9, 1880. The family later moved to Ellsworth where he was reared and educated. He was married to Katherine Donnelly at Elroy in May, 1908 and for some years they made their home in St. Paul. Ten years ago Mr. Fitzgerald and his family moved to Hudson.
Mr. Fitzgerald started working for the Omaho Railway about 35 years ago. Since coming to Hudson he has worked as conductor on the Stillwater run most of the time. Quiet and unassuming and always attending strictly to duty, he made many friends among his fellow employees on the railroad and among those with whom he came in contact in his daily activities.
His chief interest, outside of his work, was his family and home life. His wife died on October 8, 1933, and from this deep sorrow he never fully recovered. He was a member of several organizations, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Church.
Besides his two daughters, Aileen and Margaret, he is survived by three sisters and one brother. They are: Mrs. Harry Zimmerman, Stillwater; Mrs. James Ramsey, Chicago; Mrs. Wm. Truluck, Miami, Fla.; T. E. Fitzgerald, Daytonna Beach, Fla. Mrs. Zimmerman and Mrs. Ramsey attended the funeral services.
Funeral services from the Catholic Church. Burial was made in the Catholic Cemetery.
