In 1954 he was married to Marion Karine Stayberg of Hudson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Stayberg.
A memorial service was Sunday, May 4, at the St. Croix Valley Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in St. Croix Beach.
Surviving are his widow, Marion, three children, John Jr., Kathy and Lane, and a brother, Raymond.

Head-on crash with bus claims lives of area man and wife
A Chloride couple died in a high-speed head-on collision with a bus Wednesday afternoon on Coyote Pass. The accident occurred about 2:43 p.m. on state Highway 93, about three miles north of Kingman and a half-mile south of the intersection of state highways 93 and 68.
Killed in the collision were William C. Cowell, 66, and Marion K. Cowell, 60, both of Chloride, an Arizona Department of Public Safety dispatcher disclosed this morning. Greyhound bus driver Harry James Chandler of Jacksonville, Fla., suffered a broken leg, and 12 of the 24 passengers on Chandler's bus suffered minor injuries according to DeLong and DPS Kingman District Cmdr. John Tibbetts.
Ambulances took the injured passengers to Kingman Regional Medical Center, and one unidentified passenger was flown to a Phoenix hospital with bleeding in the brain, according to Capt. Bill Johnston of the Kingman Fire Department. No information was available on where the bus was from or where it was headed.
State Highway 93 was closed for approximately three and one-half hours due to the accident.
"The passenger, the woman, basically exploded," DeLong said. "The driver did too. They got compacted into an area of a foot or so, and they erupted."
Both the late model Chevrolet Geo driven by the victims and the Greyhound bus were traveling about 55 or 60 mph, and neither vehicle braked before the collision, DeLong said.
Officers from the DPS and Kingman Police Department blocked traffic on state Highway 93, telling motorists they would be delayed for hours while the victims were moved and wreckage was cleared from the highway.
"By evidence we collected so far, we've pretty well established that the (Geo) was southbound in the northbound lane," Tibbetts said. "He drifted over (the center line)."
DPS officers called in a second bus from Las Vegas, Nev., to transport uninjured passengers into Kingman to recuperate from being shaken up.
Officers had to pry open the door of the Greyhound.
"Initially we busted windows to get people out," DeLong said.
The crumpled remains of the Geo lay approximately 135 feet from the point where officers determined the collision occurred, DeLong said, adding that investigators could not rule out a heart attack, the driver falling asleep or the driver reaching for something on the floor of the car.
"It's a nasty stretch of road," he said. "A year ago, there was a seven-fatality accident a little north of here."
Coyote Pass is a known problem spot that averages 30 traffic accidents per year, according to statistics from the DPS. But, Tibbett said, "Be careful not to blame the road. It's the people's fault."

William "Bill" Curtis Cowell and Marian Karine Cowell died Wednesday Dec. 4, 1996, in Kingman. Bill was 66; Marion was 60. They were married in Hudson, Wis., on Sept. 30, 1996.
Bill was born April 7, 1930 in Blue Mound, Wis. He moved to Chloride with his family in 1971. Marion was born Nov. 12, 1936, in Hudson, Wis. She moved to Chloride after her marriage to Bill.
In 1992, Bill retired from his job as maintenance engineer with the Mohave County School District. Marion was a homemaker and had been a missionary in Ecuador and Belize for two years. Both were ministers.
Bill is survived by one daughter, Deborah Rose of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, David Peter Cowell of Lexington, Neb., Timothy John Cowell of New Castle, Del.; his father, William Henry Cowell of Menomonie, Wis.; one brother, Keith Cowell of Tomah, Wis.; one sister, Rebecca Kanz of Winona, Minn.; and three grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Antoinette Rose; one son, Daniel Paul; one daughter, Rebecca Ruth; his mother, Helen Irene; one brother, Thomas Cowell; and one sister, Barbara Anderson.

Marion was born to Herbert and Helen Stayberg on November 12, 1936 in Hudson, Wisconsin. She grew up, went to school, and met John Heebink in 1954. Together they raised one daughter and two sons. Marion loved people, gardening, sewing and music. She brought a kindred spirit into the lives of many people.
About twenty-five years ago, Marion began an intense study of the bible which led to her baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. From that time forward, spiritual goals and pursuits were foremost in her life. She was a pioneer at the Cerbat Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kingman, Arizona.
Marion was preceeded in death by her husband in 1988 [1986]. She married Bill Cowell on September 30 1996, in Hudson, Wisconsin.
