Ruth Ida Gartman, 89, of Hudson died Saturday, March 13, at Hudson Medical Center, after being taken there earlier that morning by ambulance.
She was born March 30, 1909, in the town of St. Joseph, the daughter of William and Whilemena (Lietz) Wolf. She attended grade school at McKinley in St. Joseph and attended high school in Stillwater, Minn. Following school, she helped her family by working on the farm.
On Nov 8, 1936, she was married to Max Francis Gartman in Hudson. They lived in the town of St. Joseph for many years prior to moving to Hudson in the early 1950s. Ruth was a homemaker most of her life. After he children [one child, Virginia] were in school, she worked at Erickson's grocery store for 20 years until her retirement.
She enjoyed all sorts of gardening and grew vegetables, raspberries and strawberries. She also liked crocheting and reading and was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater.
Preceeding her death were her husband, Max; two sisters, Dorothea Wolf and Myrtle Lindstrom; and a brother, Alfred Wolf.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Gartman (friend David Pickard) of River Falls; a sister-in-law, Theresa Dierks of Hudson; and many nieces and nephews in the New Richmond, Baldwin and Woodville areas.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, with the Rev. Marcus Birkholtz officiating. Organist Michael Schmidt accompanied congregational singing.
Burial was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Stillwater. Casketbearers were Dean Lindstrom, Arthur Hawkinson, Robert Gartmann and David Pickard.

Ruth's recipe for the green salad brought to every Thanksgiving.
Pistachio Dessert Salad (Watergate Salad)
1 lb. can crushed pineapple and juice
1 pkg pistachio instant pudding
1 c. miniature marshmellows
1 c. chopped nuts
Stir dry ingredients into pineapple and jouce. Mix in other ingredients. Pour into mold and chill.
Can be used either for light dessert or salad.
