William committed suicide by hanging shortly after the death of his parents. As the oldest he was expected to handle the settlement of the estate, a task he really didn't want. The day he was to go there to settle things, he went out to the barn to get the team. When he didn't return Mrs. Wolf sent Alfred to look for him. He found him hanging in the barn. Mrs. Wolf got a ladder and cut him down but it was too late. (Theresa, Dec. 1997)

Suicide in St. Jo
Last Sunday morning after William Wolf of the town of St. Joseph and his wife had finished milking and returned to the house he remarked that he would go out and take care of the horses. Soon after one of his children, a little boy, went the barn and finding the door locked, told his mother that his father was hanging in the barn. She broke open the door, sent the boy for a knife and cut him down, but it was just too late.
He was in Hudson the day before, well and in good cheer, except that he was worrying over the settlement of an estate which he had been appointed administrator. It was so plain a case of suicide that no inquest was held. He leaves a wife and four small children.
