(31 Dec 1851 - 6 Jan 1924)
Land records at the St. Croix County Courthouse show that on 18 Jul 1885, he the south half of the southeast quarter of Section 12, Town 29, R20W from Duncan and Jane McGregor for the sun of $310.
Theresa doesn't recall that her uncle Joe had any occupation other than a handyman, hiring out mostly to people in town. During the warm weather months he often stayed with the Thorsen family on First street and worked for people in Hudson. In the winter when there wasn't much work to be had in town he would divide his time between the families of his brother, Tony Gartmann, and sister, Margaret Krattley. As Theresa recalls he was staying at Krattley's when he became ill and died. Not having children of his own, he would sometimes loose patience with the numerous children in the Gartmann household. Theresa recalled the time while they were living on the Lindman place, that her brothers Joe, Rob and Max, piled an old couch full of wood and hauled it around, pretending that it was a load of wood for sale and delivery in town. Joe got tired of their game and noise and got after them for it. Her ma, on the other hand, thought it good fun that kept them busy and out of other mischief. Theresa also recalled that she and Margaret were a little bit afraid of him. One time when they saw him coming up the driveway they ran upstairs and hid under the bed. He came upstairs, peered under the bed, and gave them each a dollar to come out. After their father's death, he would oftentimes help the boys with chores. (Theresa to Nancy, December 1997)
