Individual Details
Johann Anton Gartmann
(22 Jun 1803 - 21 Jun 1879)
Researching a family history in 2014 is much different than researching it 30 or even 20 years earlier. Many primary sources can be found online at FamilySearch.com, the Digitalarkivet, Svare, Ancestry.com and more. Swiss records are the exception. While the records from a few municipalities such as Fribourg and a few other places are available, the majority are not. This account of our Gartmann family in Switzerland relies heavily on information provided by our family in Switzerland and especially on a family chart done by _____ , a copy of which Jay brought back after visiting Vals in 1990.
Prior to Jay's time in Europe and Switzerland as part of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls' "Semester Abroad" program, we had written to the Swiss Genealogical Inquiry Office in 1985. They provided us basic information on which to begin our research.
Letter from Swiss Genealogical Inquiry Office, 12 June 1985
The1850 Census, Canton of Grison, shows the following family registered in the community of Vals:
Gartmann, Johannes, born 1806
Gartmann, Anna Maria, born 1810
Gartmann, Johannes Antoni, born 1845, later corrected to 1844
Gartmann, Anna Maria, born 1846
Gartmann, Margaritha, born 1848
Gartmann,Joseph Anton, born 1850
This family Gartmann was citizen from St. Martin; this is a neighboring community of Vals.
When Art and I visited Vals in 2002 we were able to look at the actual church records for St. Martin which are kept by the Romanisch priest at Uors. These books go back to about the 1830's. We looked at Confirmation, Births & Deaths. The priestt spoke only Romanisch but Lydia Bapst-Jorger was with us and provided translation. We were left alone with the books in the priest's dining room while he left for other errands.
