Car Crash Kills Hudson Boy, 18, Last Saturday
An 18 year old Hudson High school student was killed instantly about 4 p.m. Saturday, four miles east of Houlton on Cty. Trk. E, when the car he was driving failed to make a curve and overturned. He was John Charles Shefland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Shefland of Hammond, and foster son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Olson, 618 Sixth st.
According to St. Croix County traffic officer LaVerne J.Burke of Hudson, who investigated the accident, Shefland was traveling east, enroute to Perch Lake for an afternoon swim. He was alone in the car.
Burke said Shefland was thrown from the car when it overturned and was killed instantly. The car was a total loss.
The slight, dark haired youth, was born in Frederic, December 29, 1940, the son of Reuben and Alice Radunzel Shefland. The family farmed near River Falls and later moved to a rural residence in the vicinity of Hammond.
John attended school in Hammond, and 19 months ago came to Hudson to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Olson.
He would have been a senior at Hudson High School this fall. During his high school career here, he was active in the Future Farmers of America organization, the boys glee club and was a valued member of the football team. He was intensely interested in athletics.
Burke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. During the visitation Monday and Tuesday, the mortuary was visited by a constant stream of sober-faced and pensive teenagers, most of whom had been school mates.
The bronze metallic coffin was banked with an abundance of flowers which attested to the esteem in which the young man was held by his many friends. On his finger he wore the high school class ring of Mimi Keyes, his girl friend.
Funeral services were at the Lutheran House of Worship in River Falls, 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Arthur Johnson officiating. Burial was at Lone Pine Cemetery in Woodville.
Pallbearers were Richard Kidd, William Hatch, Jr., Murray Edin, James Woodruff, Dallas James Peterson and George Olson, Jr. Honorary pallbearers included William Knutson, James Beaudry, James Tulgren, Robert Gilbert, Dennis Doonan and Richard Bengston.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Shefland of Hammond; two sisters, Jacqueline of Hammond, and Mrs. Shirely Flatland of New Richmond, a brother, Gene, of Hudson; his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olson of Hudson and their son, William Charles.
