Thomas K. "T.K." Stanton

OBIT: Thomas K. Stanton was born in Athens, Tenn., August 1, 1867 and died in
the Holy Rosary hospital in Miles City on July 30. Funeral services were held
Monday afternoon in Fairview hall with the Rev. Mr. Fitz of the Miles City
Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was in the Butte Creek cemetery family
plot. Pallbearers were Lawrence Swanser, Oliver Barnes, Edgar Dent, Roy
Edsakk, Kenneth Butts and Frederick Loomis, jr., all long time friends.
Mr. Stanton's early life was spent in his home state and as a young man he
moved to Missouri. During his residence there he married Miss Ellen Guffey of
Holden, Missouri. The young couple made their home in Missouri where six
children were born. In 1914 the family moved to what is now Garfield county
and settled on land in Seven Blackfoot. As time passed Mr. and Mrs. Stanton
saw their four boys make homes in the same neighborhood and become substantial
farmers. Their two daughters made their homes nearby for several years.
In 1944 they suffered their first great sorrow in the death of their son,
Irl Stanton, and a few months later, Mrs. Stanton passed away. Survivors
are two daughters, Mrs. Ida Goin, Ephrata, Wash.; and Mrs. Hattie Garett,
Poplarville, Miss.; and his three sons, Ebert, Ray and Niles; 17 grandchildren
and 25 great grandchildren.

"In August, 1914, Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Stanton and their family, Ida (Goin),
Hattie, Irl, Ray, Ebert and Niles and one son-in-law, Bud Goin, came from Ford,
Kansas, which is near Dodge City. They came by railroad on an emigrant car to
Upton, Wyoming. They were looking for homestead land so came to Miles City,
Montana from Upton, Wyoming by wagon. They stayed about a month in Miles City.
Then, in October, they came to the Henry Garret homestead which had been
squatted on by Charles Hopkins. Later they moved to School Section 36 on the
Sheep Hill. They spent that winter in a part dugout house. Then they moved to
the homestead in Lot 1, Township 19, Range 35E, just south of Sheep Hill."
