Carroll and Ethel had no children of their own. They first adopted Marjorie and Bill, and in late 1940 or early 1941 after a tragic fire at the Vernon Gilland home (Vernon being a son of Rosella Brandt Gilland), Jean and Dennis
Gilland came to live with them.

Ethel Staberg Brandt
Ethel Staberg Brandt, 79, of Osceola, and a native of Lakeland, died Feb. 20 in St. Paul Ramsey Hospital.
Mrs. Brandt was born April 27, 1898 in Lakeland, daughter of Ole and Julia Staberg. She attended schools in Bayport and Stillwater and was employed by the Anderson Corporation before her marriage. She married Carroll Brandt in June 1927, in East Farmington, Wis. The couple farmed two miles east of East Farmington on the John Brandt family farm. Mr. Brandt died Nov. 18, 1970.
Mrs. Brandt lived in Osceola and for a short time in St. Paul before entering the hospital Dec. 28.
She is survived by two sons, William Brandt of Deer Park, and Dennis Brandt of Mauston, two daughters, Mrs. John (Marjorie) Kastens and Jean Gilland, both of St. Paul; 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. William (Ruth) Weber of St. Paul.
Funeral services were in Zion Lutheran Church, East Farmington, with interment in the church cemetery.
